Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Robert Hunter's Jack O'Roses LP transcription available for download

Last year, I transcribed Jack O'Roses using high-end analog equipment, but then realized Lossless Legs wouldn't take it since it was a commercial release, and I didn't particularly care to torrent it anywhere else, so I sat on it.

Just now, it occurred to me I could at least upload it to my site as a ZIP archive and make it available for download. The archive contains 16-bit FLAC files, front and back cover images, a TXT file with information on the LP and transcription (also attached to this post), and FLAC fingerprints.

http://www.avantgardeproject.org/jack_o_roses.zip

If you haven't heard this LP (hey, there must be someone), it's really special. This transcription has a more spacious sound than the MP3s that Mr. Hunter made available on his website.

Please feel free to post this URL to other forums or pass it around however you choose. And if Mr. Hunter objects to his work being made available in this way, I hope he will let me know so I can remove it from my site. It's just that it's such a beautiful performance and has been out of print for so long.

Enjoy!

Thank you very much for this needle drop. I have a decent copy of the album on red vinyl, but not nearly as pristine as this record. I also lack the level of equipment you used to capture the analog signal. This is the best I have ever heard this record sound.

Thanks again,
pete

Lou:
Thank you -- can never get tired of this gem. ("Book of Daniel".....very humbling.)
Let me know if you need anything else that you are interested in transcribing; I may have it.

Thank you, --- AshesRising (Jerri1031-dp3 AT yahoo DOT com)

Perhaps you or your husband would like to post your thoughts on Robert. Hunter seems to get scant mention in the forum these days.
By the way, are you from Yorkshire by any chance?

The reason I asked was because I knew a Pam Kellett when I worked in the IT dept at George Wimpey's, back in the early eighties if I remember right and she was from Yorkshire and a very nice person too as I recall. My name is Alan.

My husband is a dead head from Bradford, West Yorkshire. I too am from Bradford but was more into the folk music. Robert Hunter was the middle ground. (That sounds awful, think he could be described better!). Do you know some Kelletts? Think the name is actually from Lancashire.

Don't know what to post about Robert Hunter except his lyrics are probably the best written, and to hear him sing them is a privilege. ALthough Jerry does not do a bad job!

THANKS Lou!!!

I have been wearing out a Garcia/Kahn version of "Reuben and Cerise" for the past month or so and it is good to here Hunter's solo version; not to mention the other choice cuts.

Grate stuff, a really sweet transcription.

You are so awesome.

I had just started digitizing this from from a TDK SA-90 tape, that was taken from a scratchy album about 25 years ago.

Now ... if I could just get someone to do the same with Mickey's "Rolling Thunder".

I've made some CD covers for this little gem which are available in PDF or Adobe InDesign format, and you can download the PDF version. Email me at chris@live-dead.co.uk if you'd like the InDesign version. They have been created to fit on an A4 page, so if you print them out do NOT use the "shrink to fit" option.

probably heretical of me to say, but Hunter's Box of Rain on this LP is better than any version Phil ever sang, and the Terrapin is absolutely chilling; the entire LP is a musical and lyrical masterpiece and the fact that it is out of print speaks volumes for average joe's music listening preferences

Hey Arb... If you could make a copy and send it my way I'd be much more beholdin' towards you than I already am! I only had this from the RH mp3 download and lost it when the computer crashed... I have moved, will send new address by email. Thanks to Lou for supplying this gem also... I see it's even attracted our friend Ashes attention, hello to you too!

Lou, I'm that somebody that you spoke of. "Tales Of The Great Rum Runners" is the only R.Hunter album I've ever heard. I appreciate you posting this link, as it is as you said "really special".

I do however have a question concerning your zip file. Were you aware that it is missing one track?

Again, thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for making this available. This was such a special album for me 20-25 years ago... you know, the kind of album you credit with saving your life, more or less, at various points. My copy was on some cassette which is now in a box somewhere (or else long gone), and it was so amazing to download it last night and hear Box of Rain, with every note so familiar as if I'd just heard it yesterday.

With RH, it seems you either love his voice or hate it, but I for one find this album sublime. Thank you again!
